EIA Publishes Regional Electricity Supply and Pricing Forecasts Using UPLAN Model

LCG, August 13, 2019--The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) announced that it is revising the presentation and modeling of its forecasts for electricity supply and market hub pricing to better reflect current electricity markets and system operations in the U.S. Beginning with the August 2019 Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), the new forecasting approach models electricity markets using the UPLAN production cost optimization software developed by LCG Consulting. EIA uses the solution results provided by this proprietary model to develop the STEO forecasts of monthly electricity generation, fuel consumption, and wholesale prices.

DOE Selects Tampa Electric Site for Carbon Capture Project Grant

LCG, July 20, 2010--The Department of Energy (DOE) selected Tampa Electric's Big Bend Station for a carbon capture project that will receive an $8.9 million grant. This pilot plant was one of ten selected by the DOE to improve efficiencies and lower costs for carbon capture technologies employed at coal-fired power plants.

The project will demonstrate new POSTCAP technology that uses an amino acid salt as a solvent for CO2 absorption. Siemens Energy will design, install, and operate a pilot plant to capture 90 percent of the CO2 from a slipstream (1 MW equivalent) of the post-combustion exhaust gas. The flue gas will be extracted downstream of an existing Siemens Wet FGD system. A benefit of using the non-toxic, biodegradable solvent is a more environmentally friendly process.

The pilot project is scheduled to commence operations in 2013. Siemens began operations of its first pilot CO2 capture plant for coal-fired power plants at the Staudinger power plant in Germany in September 2009.
