New York Poised to Close Last Coal-fire Power Plant

LCG, December 4, 2019--The last operating coal-fired power plant in New York is moving toward closure shortly. Last month, Somerset Operating Company, a subsidiary of Riesling Power LLC, submitted a request to the New York State Public Service Commission (NYSPSC) to waive the state's required, 180-day notice to close the Somerset Station, allowing the facility to be retired on February 15, 2020. Closure is contingent on approvals by both NYSPSC and the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), which will evaluate if it will cause an adverse effect on grid reliability.

Two Wind Projects Proposed For Dakotas

LCG, Sep. 16, 2002--Two member electric cooperatives belonging to Basin Electric Power Cooperative may have two new 40-megawatt wind farms installed in their service territories by the end of next year.

FPL Energy LLC, a subsidiary of FPL Group, Inc. has offered to build, own, and operate the two installations, while Basin Electric would purchase the output. "By using the energy from this project within the Basin Electric family of cooperatives, we are able to avoid the problems associated with transporting power to large load centers like Minneapolis or Chicago," the CEO of Basin Electric, Ron Harper, commented.

The installation planned for North Dakota would be sited near the town of Edgeley, in the territories of Central Power Electric Cooperative and Dakota Valley Electric. The project slated for South Dakota would produce power within the territory of the East River Electric Power Cooperative, and the Dakota Energy Cooperative.

Developer FPL Energy now operates 26 wind farms in nine states. Basin Electric members and owners produce power for 1.7 million customers across 124 rural electric systems in Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
