New York Poised to Close Last Coal-fire Power Plant

LCG, December 4, 2019--The last operating coal-fired power plant in New York is moving toward closure shortly. Last month, Somerset Operating Company, a subsidiary of Riesling Power LLC, submitted a request to the New York State Public Service Commission (NYSPSC) to waive the state's required, 180-day notice to close the Somerset Station, allowing the facility to be retired on February 15, 2020. Japanese Approve New 2,740 Megawatt Nuclear Plant

LCG, May 16, 2001A panel of the Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry this morning approved plans to build a large, new nuclear power plant near Hiroshima in southern Japan.

Nuclear development in Japan, which gets about a third of its electricity from nuclear plants, has been at a standstill since an accident at a fuel processing plant in Tokaimura killed two workers in 1999.

Koichi Sakamoto, a spokesman for the ministry, said the approval by the electric power panel is expected to be officially endorsed by the ministry next month. He added that Chugoku Electric Power Co., which will operate the plant, had worked with local governments and had obtained the backing of residents in Yamaguchi prefecture.

Chugoku plans to build two 1,370 megawatt reactors at the site in Kaminoseki, the first to be completed in 2012 and the second in 2015.
